New Dungeon
Topic: Progress Report

Spent time designing a dungeon this week.  A small one, since it wasn't in the initial game at all.  This little area was originally just a guarded treasure box on a world map, but I decided to do away with that.  Not quite exciting enough.  Or logical from a story standpoint.

I also spent time mourning Mason's Memoirs's loss in its competition.  But not much.  It suffered a lot from time constraints, and the winning entry was very, very good.

I liked your compo game. I forgot to send you this, a small review I did for your game.

Mason Memoirs by Eldritch

The game concept is very attractive and original. Its packaging as a visual novel is definitely the perfect choice for a game of this style. The vast complexity of the game mechanics overwhelm the player and unfortunately makes it hard to get into it comfortably.

The strong part of this game is the dialogue, it feels rich and you truly feel like you are talking to real people. The music choice pleased me and definitely helps in setting the mood. If this game would be further refined, I would suggest two things.

First, to rethink the menu system to make it looks less complex looking. Secondly, would be to first have the character start alone with one “initiate” isolated from others. This way, the player can concentrate on getting the hang of some of the core game mechanics before being presented with the others when they enter the social aspect of the game. This is definitely a game I want to see more of.

Thanks.  The game in my head was significanly different from what ended up in reality.  Isn't that the way it goes?

The game definitely needs a tutorial period and more intuitive menus, you're absolutely right.  It also needs, you know, finished.  I did code the ending, if anybody can stomach it through to November, but that's a long, empty stretch in the middle there.

I might go back to work on it in the future.  I'm hoping to have a lot more free time come summer, so we'll see.
